Jazz Choir

The DC-G Vocal Dept. has a long history of outstanding vocal jazz, dating back to the early 90s.  Our groups have won numerous honors, including I ratings at State Solo-Ensemble Contest.  In 2009 Voices Jazz Choir placed 1st in class 3A at the Best of Iowa Jazz Championships, and in 2010 Voices placed 3rd at the newly re-named Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships.  Changes has also done well at these competititions, including invitations to compete at BIJC, (IVJC), which makes us the only 3A school in the state to have 2 choirs accepted.

Auditions for jazz choir are rigorous, beginning with a series of 'jazz training' sessions during evenings in the fall.  At the end of the sessions, auditions are held, beginning with individual times consisting of solo jazz excerpts, sightsinging, and singing a musical excerpt from a vocal jazz ensemble piece.  Group auditions follow to allow the director to hear singers in different combinations and on mics.

Rehearsals are 2x a week throughout the season.  Voices and Changes participate in several festivals and competitions around the state, work with clinicians from across the country, and perform for local and community events.
